It’s been an interesting day today. Got up around 8:30, and abou 9:15 I got a call from someone at the camera store I filled out a job application at yesterday. He wanted me to come in for an interview, so I got dressed, grabbed a quick breakfast, and motored on over there. I talked with the guy who called me as well as the general manager. I think they were impressed with my experience and I think I’ve got a decent shot at the job. I should know one way or the other by mid-week next week.
The interview also reinforced something in my mind. Being passionate is good. One one part of the application there was a little box where you could write in any additional information you thought might be relevant. In that box I wrote the words, “I live for photography.” The guy who called me referred to this statement directly during the interview and said straight out that this line alone was enough for him to want to interview me. All the photo-related experience I have was actually secondary in this respect. I’m passionate about what I do, and once again it has proven to be a very, very good thing.
What else happened today? Well I’m glad you asked. For one thing, I got my grades for fall quarer (my last quarter). I pulled off a 3.73 GPA for the term, which rocks. Furthermore, this pulled up my cumulative to a respectable 3.51, which is high enough for me to graduate cum laude. Amazing what you can pull off through being a big slacker for most of your undergraduate studies.
I’ve also been working on cleaning my room, cleaning out my desk, closet, etc, and rearranging things. I just finished rearranging all of my furniture and am now in the process of trying to put books in a quasi-orderly order (that sounds weird) on my one book case. I knew I had an absurd number of books and magazines in my room, but having to move and rearrange all of them has made this all the more clear in my mind. And this is just the one book case! I have a total of three book cases in my room, all of them completely full, plus stacks of books and magazines all around my room and closet. I challenge anyone to find a way to refute my being a complete and incurable bibliophile. Anyhow, the contents of my one book case is are now in stacks all around my room and on my bed. Mostly design and photography books and magazines, but I suppose there are a few general-interest publications in there somewhere. Not that it matters, mind you. I’ll probably be working on this for the next couple hours at least.
Side note #1. Does anyone know the alcohol content of the Dutch beer called Bavaria? It’s not listed on the bottle I’m drinking right now and I’m curious, because I’m definitely feeling it. It usually takes 3-4 before I really start feeling anything, hence my curiosity.
Side note #2. My book case needs fewer shelves. Why would anyone want a book case with fewer shelves? Because there isn’t enough room to put some of my larger photography monographs in a proper orientation. I have to stack them one on top of another because the shelves are too close for the books to be able to be stood up properly. One of these days I’ll build my own book case and you can be damned sure the shelves will be such that they’ll properly accomodate books like Pool Light by Howard Schatz.
And now my beer is done and I’m feeling really good. Time to go put another beer in the fridge and get a glass of wine to sip while the second beer is chilling. No, I’m not an alcoholic. I’m just in a good mood tonight and feel like having a few drinks.
OK, to hell with chilling the beer. The pantry closet is cool enough.
Anyway, on to other things. Like clairvoyant shoes.
And this is going nowhere. I’m slightly drunk, in a fantastic mood, and I need to be paying attention to other things. A second, later post possible tonight if I have the energy.
